The rare collection of art in one of Lincolnshire’s lesser known castles

Grimsthorpe Castle in south Lincolnshire is home to a rare collection of lettering art created by some of the UK’s most foremost artists. Located in the old walled garden, there is now the largest group of artworks in the Art & Memory Collection, a group of work held in trust by the Lettering Arts Trust.

Visitors can venture through the castle gardens where they will find 25 pieces of lettering art, each portraying different ideas, using a range of materials. Grimsthorpe’s 2024 event calendar features a guided tour of the Art & Memory collection on September 15.

The tour guides representing the Lettering Arts Trust will provide insights into the individual artworks, the artists’ inspirations, techniques and their careers. Mark Noad, chair of the Lettering Arts Trust, said: “To create and hand carve fine lettering is a hard-won skill, with a longstanding heritage that the Lettering Arts Trust is pleased and determined to support through its programme of apprenticeships and journeymen.

“For more than 30 years, this charity has raised public awareness for lettering as an art form. The Art & Memory Collection serves to remind and prompt us that the act of commemoration can be beautiful and original in the hands of an artist.”

Across the UK, the national Art & Memory Collection is located at six different places and comprises 57 artworks. It can be visited at:

Arnos Vale Cemetary, Bristol

Blair Castle, Pitlochry
