RAAC concrete has been identified in dozens more schools, including a college in Lincolnshire. An updated list shows reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) has been identified in 174 schools and colleges in England.
Among the 27 new additions is Grantham College, a further education and sixth form college in Stonebridge Road, the Mirror reports. The college, which remains open, has been contacted for comment.
RAAC is a lightweight, ‘bubbly’ form of concrete widely used between the 1950s and the 1990s. It was popular with developers as it was cheaper than standard concrete but it is estimated to have a lifespan of just 30 years, with the Health and Safety Executive warning that it may collapse ‘with little or no notice’.

Lincolnshire councils have committed to investigating its presence in social housing but remain confident about its absence. Additionally, the county council has said RAAC is not present in any schools maintained by local authorities.
School system minister Baroness Barran and the Department for Education’s top official, permanent secretary Susan Acland-Hood, will be questioned by the cross-party Education Select Committee about the situation on Tuesday (September 19).
It comes after a car crash grilling at the Public Accounts committee last week in which Ms Acland-Hood and the DfE’s chief operating officer Jane Cunliffe refused to reveal the number of schools that still needed checking for dodgy concrete. Dame Meg Hillier told the civil servants “we are not playing a game” after they repeatedly dodged questions from MPs on RAAC.
Ms Acland-Hood and Ms Cunliffe said they had completed more than 600 surveys of schools, which are suspected of having RAAC, to confirm whether there is an issue. But they refused to tell MPs the number of outstanding surveys, only saying the department had “several more” in the pipeline.
They explained they have increased the number of surveying firms used by the DfE from three to eight, suggesting the number could be fairly large. Ms Cunliffe admitted: “I think the fact that we have increased the surveying capacity so much indicates that we do have several to get through in the next few weeks.”
