Lincoln City‘s new head coach has given the fans one guarantee ahead of his first game in charge. Michael Skubala was appointed by the Imps on Monday, November 13 and brings with him more than 20 years of coaching experience.
The 41-year-old was most recently part of the coaching team at Leeds United where he took charge of three games, including a 2-2 draw at Manchester United, as interim head coach. His first test as Lincoln City boss comes this Saturday against Stevenage, who sit fifth in League One.
Despite only being at the club for a matter of days, Skubala has guaranteed fans that the players are an “honest group” full of young talent. He said: “So far I’ve seen a really good, honest and hard-working group.
“I’ve seen some really good young talent that needs to be nurtured and flourished, and I’ve seen some older pros that really help that. It’s a really good, honest group which I think not every day the fans will see.
“I can guarantee the fans that they’re a good group in that sense. I think sometimes my bit is to add a little bit of the finesse around what they do, help them with their game and mature because they are young and the game is a challenge for them. It’s my bit to help them to push and, on a matchday, push them to try and win games.”
Skubala believes that the Stevenage game will be one of the team’s toughest tests and dealing with their physicality will be a challenge. He added: “I think we know what’s going to come and I think we know how their style is and how they want to play.
“It’s effective and it’s probably one of the biggest challenges this group will find this season because they’re young and this style of football we might come up against is going to be a different challenge for them.”
Speaking on the recruitment process, he said: “It was a rigorous process with lots of challenges which I quite like because they really dug deep into me, where I’ve been and what I’ve done. Football usually doesn’t operate like that but I quite like it because it shows the club has a plan and are really diligent on their recruitment.”
Lincoln City travel to Stevenage on Saturday, November 18 with a 3pm kick-off.
