Drug driver caught hiding in ditch after near-crash with Lincolnshire Police

A drug driver was caught hiding in a ditch after attempting to hide from Lincolnshire Police. May Woodward, 20, was found cowering in a watery ditch after fleeing from police officers in the early hours of March 30, 2023.

Woodward had pulled out in front of them in her black Ford Fiesta at Gunby Roundabout, near Skegness, causing them to brake hard to avoid crashing. A spokesperson for the force said they indicated to Woodward that she must pull over, but she instead sped off towards Gunby.

A short while later, a second officer saw the reflection of a number plate through a hedge, in a large muddy field. When he went to investigate, he found the black Fiesta that Woodward had attempted to hide and saw a figure running away from the vehicle into the dark.

Using the black-and-white thermal imaging camera on his drone, he managed to locate a heat source in a ditch, not far from the car. The spokesperson said: “Woodward was located hiding in the water-filled ditch.

“She was soaking wet and was retrieved to safety before being arrested.” She was charged and pleaded guilty to failing to stop, driving over the limit for cannabis and cocaine, and driving without insurance.

Woodward, of Sea Lane, Huttoft, was handed a £199 fine and disqualified from driving for 16 months at Lincoln Magistrates’ Court on February 2.
