Motorists have been left scratching their heads after spotting two conflicting speed limits in a Lincolnshire village. Heading down the B1188 into Digby, a sign can be seen signalling a 50mph speed limit.
However, painted on the road just in front of the sign is a large 40mph speed limit symbol. One motorist, Susie Glover, shared a picture of the two speed limits in a local Facebook group with a caption: “Seen on our roads earlier and gave me a giggle – talk about confusing!”
Other users responded to the picture, with many having a laugh and a joke about the situation, and some offering a sensible explanation. Lincolnshire County Council has since explained the real reasoning behind the conflicting speed limit signs.
The council said that the 40mph roundels have been painted ahead of the signs going in and they’re not all done by the same subcontractor. They explained that the new speed limit of 40mph is not enforceable until the signs match.
The signs are due “imminently” and are being put in “any time now”. The council added that this is what usually happens with putting in signage and lines.
