Bernie Taupin pays surprise visit to The Castle Hotel in Lincoln and stays in room named after himself

Legendary songwriter Bernie Taupin paid a surprise visit to a Lincoln hotel and stayed in a room which had just recently been named after him. Taupin, who is best known for writing most of Elton John’s songs, stayed at The Castle Hotel in Lincoln with his brother and sister-in-law while he was filming for a new documentary about his life.

The 73-year-old was born near Sleaford and grew up in Lincolnshire, living in the village of Owmby-by-Spital for some time. Just recently, his film crew rang up The Castle Hotel on Westgate to see if they had any rooms available.

Little did they know, the hotel names their deluxe suites after famous Lincolnshire people and had just opened a new suite named after Taupin. Co-owner of the hotel, Saera Ahmad, said: “When the film crew rang us they asked what we had available, so we went through and gave them the names.

“They put the phone down and talked amongst themselves, obviously thinking ‘what a coincidence’. They asked us why we had a room named after Taupin and then told us that he was who they were trying to book the room for. He was thrilled at the thought of having a room named after him.”

Saera says Taupin ordered a beef rib dish and “quite a lot of drinks” at the hotel. He had photos with the staff, including the chef because he enjoyed the meal so much, and chatted away about how his childhood in Lincolnshire was the insipration for many of his song lyrics.

Saera added: “They stayed with us on Saturday [February 3] and they were going to stay Sunday but they got their filming done. Bernie joined us on Saturday evening, dined with us and came and had drinks in the bar with us. He was really happy to chat away and came back on Sunday to have a drink before heading off to London.

“He was lovely and really charming. We name all of our deluxe rooms after famous Lincolnshire people and from day one I knew I wanted to call one Taupin. A lot of people don’t know who he is and a lot of people don’t know he’s from Lincolnshire.”
